James and Donna
Mood:  rushed
Now Playing: Tennessee Waltz
Topic: Trip to Memphis
Well, James (Junior) and Donna left this morning going back to Lincoln, Nebraska.
They were down here in Memphis (Bartlett) visiting family all last week. They also visiting with their daughter, Anna Marie and her family in Mississippi and granddaughter April of Bartlett and her new baby. Originally, they had Donna's Granddaughter Chantelle with them but her farther met her in Memphis and took her back to the Gulf coast where he now lives in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. I think she will fly back to Lincoln when school starts back. She is 14 years old and a very nice mannerly young lady. I enjoyed her visit although it was too short. Her father, Jim Warren seems to be a nice fellow too. We all went to Cracker Barrel at Sycamore View and I-40. I hope James and Donna have a nice trip back home in their new smooth riding Park Avenue. Gail and I hope to go visit them perhaps in the fall. I have never been to Nebraska. So, I don't know what I'm missing?

Now Playing: You are my Sunshine
Topic: Nick's Visit

My 14 and 1/2 year old Grandson Nick came and spent most of last week with me. He came by himself because Michael had to stay back and study because he is in summer school. Nick and I bonded pretty good. His mannerisms and the way he expresses himself reminds me of my Son Robby. Nick thinks he has a cool granddad. (I think so too). It was hot last week and we pretty much did indoor activities, namely the Mall. He's a very much normal teenage boy who likes girls (Thank God). The old saying, "a picture is worth a thousand words" is true here. So, check out the latest photos posted. I took him back tonight. He is leaving for Florida July 16th. He says he wants to see me again before he leaves. He is a very good kid and I will miss seeing him but am thankful I had the opportunity to have interacted with my Grandson. I am proud of him. His brother Michael will stay with me later when he finishes summer school. He is staying in Memphis for the next two years to finish up his High School. Him and I should have plenty of time to bond.

Robby's Birthday

Breakfast of Champions - Rob Sowell

The best Father's Day gift Bobby ever got was from God. He gave him his first born son, Robert Lee Sowell II (better known as Rob or Robby). He was born on Father's Day, Jun 21st, 1981 in Memphis, TN. In addition of being born on Father's Day, he also was born on the longest day of the year and the first day of summer. To set the record straight, regardless what he may have heard from other sources, Robby was named after his Father. His Father was named after DR Robert G. Lee who was a famous Southern Baptist Preacher. When Robert Sowell (Bobby) senior grew up and entered military service, he dropped the Initial "G", hence, Robert Lee Sowell was the official name. When Rob was born, he was given his Father's name also without the Initial "G". *Included in the below links is a letter written to Robert G. Lee Sowell, SR from DR Robert G. Lee in 1947, (It even mentions music.) How did he know that music would become a big part of his life?

I would like to wish my son Robby, who resides in Niagara Falls, Ontario Canada along with his siblings, Amanda Marie and Christopher Michael, a very Happy Birthday! I will call him tonight, I miss seeing him very much and hope to see him in the near furture. Now, you know a little more about my son, Robby Lee."HAPPY BIRTHDAY ROB"! Hope to see you soon. Love, -Dad

Other people Rob shares birthdays with are Price Williams, June 21,1982 and Country singer Martina McBride gave birth to a baby girl today, Jun 21st, 2005. The star and her husband John welcomed the arrival of Ava Rose Kathleen in Nashville, Tennessee. Both Ava and 38-year-old McBride were doing well, according to the singer's website.

Happy 1st day of summer everyone. According to our weather forecaster, there will be 14 hours of sunlight today. Also, look in tomorrow nights sky and see the annual "strawberry moon".

Happy Father's Day
Mood:  caffeinated
Now Playing: Daddy's Hands
Topic: Happy Father's Day

Well, I created an Art page, a collection of some of my works. Left is a cartoon of my Dad, James W. Sowell, Sr. who passed away Oct 24, 1989. He is still loved and missed. I will always cherish the memories. He also played the piano and harmonica. Although he's gone, I still wish him a Happy Father's Day in Heaven.

Speaking of Father's Day, the best Father's Day gift I ever got was from God. He gave me my first born son, Robert Lee Sowell II (better known as Rob or Robby). He was born on Father's Day, Jun 21st, 1981 in Memphis, TN. He use to have an xman website but I don't know if he still has it. I will check and see if he still does, If he does I will post his link here like I did for Mandy's Art link. All of my Canadian children were born on American holidays! It's very appropriate since they were all three born in American in Memphis, TN. (Yea for Memphis Bar-B-Q!) They all are good Kids! I miss seeing them very much! God Bless and take care!!

Trip to the Mall
Mood:  cheeky
Now Playing: They call it Puppy Love

Well, I went and picked up my Grandson's Michael and Nick today. They spent the day with me. First we went to the Waffle House for breakfast then I took Mike to get a hair cut. Then we cruised the mall for about two hours. Nick had some games to trade in at the game store and got a new one. He was all excited about that one. After exhausting ourselves at the mall we went home. When Gail got home around 5:30 we all went to CC's Pizza for supper and of course Mike and Nick pigged out at the bar. After all that I took them back to their other Grandfather's house. Nick was going to spend the night but decided not to until maybe next week. Mike could not spend the night because he is in summer school making up credits so he has to study. They said that they had a good time and had a cool Grandpa Sowell (especially during the day) but that it was boring at my house at night. Gail's niece from Austin, TX is here for a few week's and is staying in Mandy's room. That most likely had something to do with Nick's decision not to stay over. He wanted to play his new game but figured that it would bother us old folks. They are supposed to come back next week. Nick will be here in Memphis all summer but wants to get back home to his girlfriend, Ashley (pictured above with Nick) and Michael will finish up his high school in Memphis and be here for two years. He's being home schooled.

I took a roll of film today and will post the new pics as soon as I get them developed at Walmart. Well, they did wear me out today, so I am retiring for the night. Good night ya'll.

Answer the Phone
Mood:  chatty
Now Playing: We are the Champions

Well, yesterday I was working on line when my phone rang and my call wave kicked in. It was my Grandson Michael. He and his brother Nick, (my other grandson) are here in Memphis staying the summer with their other Grandfather. I called them right back and talked briefly with them. They said that they have been in Memphis for about a week. Their schedule is pretty full this week with a family reunion on that side and a weekend fishing trip in Arkansas and I will see them next Monday or so.

I am excited to say the least for the opportunity to see them. I saw Michael back during the winter when he was visiting Memphis. We went to a movie ("Day after Tommorrow") and he spent the night with me. However, it's been several years since I saw Nick. He was just a little boy like in the picture but now he is a young teenager of 14. I think he is still short though. I will find out when I see him next week. I think he may have gotten his height from his Great Grandpa Sowell who was a shot man.

I don't know what we are going to be doing. You know how bored teenage boys gets. They want to "Hang out" with their Grandpa Sowell. We will most likely do a movie and cruse the mall. Michael did inform me that his birthday has just past (May 17). It's hard to believe he is 16 now and drives. I will have to get him something for his birthday. And then of course Nick's birthday isn't until November but I better go ahead and treat him too, since he won't be here in November (Thank God for my gigs). Michael did tell me that he may stay his senior year here in Memphis and attend Gate Way School, which is a private Baptist school. They would love to have him on their basketball team. He would be an asset on any school's team. Michael is 6'5" tall and loves to play basketball. He tells me that he's been practicing. I told him that his height and playing skills could very well be his ticket to a good rewarding life. So, we will see. He also told me that he want's to work at the corner supermarket.

Well, I'm going to bed. I played at Gig today at Ava Maria and I have another one tomorrow at Riverdale.

Although there just a one hour performance, I need the rest. I gotta keep my thinker straight.
Good night.

Discovering Taste
Mood:  hungry
Now Playing: Pizza Shrimp Blues
Topic: Swrimp Pizza?

Growing up in Frayser was about as country as country could get. It was years before being annexed to Memphis. We even lived on a pig and goat farm (presently Chandler Street). So our food was typical country. Mostly beans, cornbread and other Southern fixings. We never ventured out to Memphis restaurants other than hamburgers or cafes with southern home cooked plate lunches.

When I got drafted, the world of food opened up. I was 20 years old before I had my 1st pizza. It was in Denver, CO. where I was stationed at Lowry ARB for Technical school. I remember seeing a truck coming around to the barracks delivering something in a flat box. I remember thinking, "What in the world is that thing?" on further investigation, it was not only flat but round! Of course, I had to try one and have been eating Pizza every since.

I didn't eat Chinese food until I ate it in Thailand. Of course, I didn't know what I was eating but liked it. Now, I try to eat at a Chinese buffet about onced a week.

My experience with shrimp was much like the pizza. My first time eating it was in Ft Walton Beach, FL when I was stationed at Eglin AFB. I use to hang out at the NCO Club and heard about shrimp there. I asked, "Where do you get it?" With such a question, they knew I was a newby. So, they directed be to an Oyster Bar down by the beach. I did have a few drinks before I went there alone which proved to be disastrous. I remember ordering peal-um and eat-um shrimp. But, no one told me to pill them and I ate the whole plate with the shells still on them. I did get sick and it was a long time before I ate them again. But today, Peal-um and eat-um shrimp is my favorite sea food. And Yes, I do peel them!

Yes, children are the products of their environment and become locked in their food selection until they grow up and experience what the world has to offer in foods, I certainly did and what wonderful taste?

Birthday Mandy
Mood:  crushed out
Now Playing: Happy Birthday to You

I want to wish my daughter Mandy Sowell a happy birthday who resides in Niagara Falls, Ont Canada along with her two brothers, Robby and Chris.
Her Mom, Mary calls them her ELVIS collection since they were all born in Memphis,TN.

10:15 PM (EDT)

Well,I tried calling Mandy at home tonight as I always do on my children's birthdays.
However, she was not there and was out with her boy friend. Since I was unable to talk to her, I did the next best thing and sent her a song-a-gram, via my telephone and her answer machine. I played her the "Happy Birthday Song" live on my piano and left it recorded on the answering machine for her to listen to when she comes home.

Mandy is a gifted artist who most likely inherited it from her Dad who also is an artist. Here is a coloured Pencil drawing by her Dad taken from a photo of Mandy and Robby back on Feb 29, 1984.

Now Playing: No Can Do

I went to Millington, TN today to get my car tags renewed. I Always go there instead of the office on Summer Ave which is about 3 miles from my house in Bartlett because I can get in and out real quick and don't have to wait in a long line. Afterwards, Troy, Lamar and I went to the Number One Chinese Buffet and enjoyed lunch. I made my way to the food bar about three times. I really over did it but you supposed to at a Chinese buffet. Besides, I am now listed on Chinese search engines and get Chinese visitors. So, what better way to show my appreciation than to eat Chinese food? The all you can eat buffet is only $5.70 which includes your choice of drink with free unlimited refills. I only eat Chinese no more than twice a month.

Speaking of eating, I was in the Cracker Barrel restaurant, I-40 at exit 20 the other day in Lakeland, TN and sit by a couple from England who was on the way to visit Graceland. I couldn't help noticing them scarfing up the southern biscuits and ordering more. It was the first time they ever ate them and feel in love with the taste. They even took some with them free compliments of Cracker Barrel.
I had a pleasant conversation with them. They couldn't believe the southern hospitality
displayed in the South. They had flown to New York and rented a car to see the USA and drove south. They also couldn't believe the free refills on drinks. They said that they would be coming back for more vacations.

Topic: Ad on Gigs

Well, I was called and asked if I could please come and perform as their scheduled entertainment canceled out at the last moment. As it worked out, I had no gigs booked for that time slot and did work them in. That happens on occasions. So, I never know when I'm free or not. I'm glad I am in demand and that my gigs are on the increase. The music business has been kind to me lately!! And I think God that I'm a piano player and not a truck driver. Mood:  happy
Now Playing: That's my Baby
Topic: It was fun

Well, I Just Finished another gig. Everything went well but it wore me out. Still beats jogging. My permeant status seems to be always in between gigs. Which leaves me being internally grateful for my God given talent. I know it's a gift and I should always stay humble and thankful. I love people and I love entertaining them. And the pay is not bad either!
I had fun interacting with my audience, they seemed to be getting into it and enjoying the music. After my performance, I mingled and spoke to a lot of them. They all had kind remarks and expressed their appreciation. Unless you are a performing musician, you'll never know the feeling that comes over you. It's like none other and makes the whole musical experience worthwhile.
Well, I'm out of here (got to rest up for my next gig). Maybe I will post again later or maybe I won't, depends of the way I feel.

Meanwhile, here are lots of gig pics to look at....

What is a BLOG?

Definition

blog: A frequent, chronological publication of personal thoughts and Web links.

Information

A blog is often a mixture of what is happening in a person's life and what is happening on the Web, a kind of hybrid diary/guide site, although there are as many unique types of blogs as there are people.
People maintained blogs long before the term was coined, but the trend gained momentum with the introduction of automated published systems, most notably Blogger at blogger.com. Thousands of people use services such as Blogger to simplify and accelerate the publishing process.

Blogs are alternatively called web logs or weblogs. However, "blog" seems less likely to cause confusion, as "web log" can also mean a server's log files.

Well, I am new to this Blog thing and really don't know what I'm doing. Like everything else computer related it's a learning experience. Just wanted to post something.
